Think about it, we can keep our food safely chilled extending the shelf life by weeks at a time without even batting an eye. However, we sure take full advantage of this technology. But, our fridges tend to get really dirty with numerous liquid spills as well as matter from vegetables and meats. So, whether your fridge is housing biological hazards or next week’s garbage, you need to free your fridge from the funk inside. In this article, we will cover the regular things you need to do for a clean refrigerator.
What you need:
Let’s begin by taking a look at what you need for a clean refrigerator:
• All purpose cleaner
• Baking soda
• Micro fiber cloth
• Non-scratch sponge
• Warm soapy water
Step by step procedure:
1. Removing items from the refrigerator
The first step to a clean refrigerator is to remove items shelf by shelf. Have a garbage can, recycling bin and the nose plugs nearby. This is the time when you get rid of what you don’t need. Check all expiry dates, do a smell test and be realistic about this process. Get rid of the garbage. Clearing out the fridge is just as important as a clean refrigerator. As a general rule of thumb, if you haven’t used it in six months, it goes in the garbage.
2. Removing the shelves
Next, remove the shelves and place them on top of your counter. If you can’t remove the shelves, you will simply have to wipe the top and bottom by hand. Remove the crisper bins and place them on your counter top as well. If you can, remove the side shelves exposing the door.
3. Spraying all purpose cleaner
Now that you’ve got an empty fridge, spray the inside of the fridge down liberally using an all purpose cleaner. Get the product dripping all over the interior. If you have a stained area, apply a bit of baking soda to it.
4. Cleaning the drawers and shelves
While the fridge is soaking, start cleaning the drawers and shelves. Use a non-scratch sponge to clean the drawers and shelves. If the shelves are large and don’t fit in your sink, place them on a towel on your counter. Rinse with clean water and then buff dry with a micro fiber cloth. Do this with each piece.
5. Clean the refrigerator
Take the non-scratch sponge and begin cleaning the inside of the fridge. Start at the top and work your way to the bottom. If it is really dirty with grime stuck to it, have a garbage can near you for easy deposit of amassed crumbs. Wipe with a clean microfiber cloth to remove the remaining residue.
6. Put everything back together
Finally, put everything back together again and replace the foods where they belong. Make sure you wipe all bottles, containers and jars to make sure they are clean when you put them back in the fridge.
